Disney Castle

No trip to Munich is complete without taking a train down to Fussen, to visit the famed Neuschwanstein Castle which has inspired the likes of Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. The castle exudes a style typical of the Romanesque and Gothic architecture and its an extravagance that even the King himself could not afford. Its a sight to behold, and my photos does it no justice at all.

Enjoying an ice cream before the climb

A trip to Fussen is made more worthwhile if you visit both the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle in the area. The lesser known castle, Hohenschwangau, sits atop a hill right across Neuschwanstein and was the castle that King Ludwig grew up in. There are several ways to get to these 2 castles and they include a carriage ride up, shuttle bus or the more reliable walking trial (do allow for 40 mins to reach the castle). We were blessed with a very fine weather in the month of October, and walking was the more attractive option we chose.

Unfortunately photo taking is strictly forbidden within the castle, so pardon the lack of photos! And just like the fairytales, we took a horse carriage to the next castle.

With a view like that, its no surprise King Ludwig chose the hills of Fussen to build his summer palace.

Ok, so I was being the typical tourist, giving no regards to instructions, taking pictures as I deemed fit as I walked through the Neuschwanstein castle.

After the castle tour, do make sure to make your way towards Marienburke for a postcard view of Neuschwanstein.

Neuschwanstein in its full glory

At the end of the day, we rewarded ourselves with a nice cup of chilled chocolate drink, a rest for our tired feet and a stunning view of Neuschwanstein in the background.

Jagerhaus

As the last rays of the evening sun began to set behind the mountains of the Alpen Lake, we found ourselves lazing by the lake, watching kids fascinated by the swans cruising along the shore.
