Datong: Heng Shan

One fine weekend, the girls and I took a bus trip out of the city. We ended up in Datong, a city of coal mines and power plants, and some serious pollution problem.

The city center was a dreadful place, and time was better spent on the outskirt where we explored mountains and caves, with very rich Buddhist influence.

Our first stop was Heng Shan, one of China's five sacred Daoist mountains. It was a rather friendly climb with proper steps built into the slopes of the mountain.

Heng Shan

It was not long before dor decided to up her game, she was getting restless by the simple climb. She flung herself to the walls of the mountain, and started crawling monkey-like up the slope.

She just had to show off her rock climbing skills
These temples are a common sight of sacred mountains that are destinations for pilgrimage.
