In Beijing you have the hutongs, but in Shanghai, there are the nong tangs. Similar to the hutong concept, nong tangs are the characteristic living quarters of Shanghai's glamorous past. The fusion of both eastern and western styles in its architectural design is what makes the nong tangs uniquely different.
Somewhere in Xing Tian Di, there is a Nong Tang Museum which gives you a preview of what a typical unit in a nong tang should look like.
